The weather is warm, trails are open and the great outdoors is calling.

If you've never been hiking before, or want to brush up on the basics before you hit the trails, look no further. OrthoCarolina's Gary Schneider, PT, DPT, covers the benefits of hiking, basic gear you'll need to get started and common dangers to watch out for.

GET READY FOR YOUR NEXT HIKE

Most importantly, Schneider reminds us not to overdo it. Start slow on an easier trail and work your way up to a more strenuous route. Wherever you go, keep these tips in mind for a fun and safe hike.

  • Bring plenty of water and hydrate often
  • Protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen and a hat
  • Wear lightweight clothing and hiking boots or supportive shoes
  • Take breaks whenever you need to
