Specialized Pediatric Hand and Upper Extremity Care

The OrthoCarolina Congenital Hand Clinic provides specialized, multidisciplinary care for children born with differences in the hand, wrist, or upper extremity. Our goal is to improve function, support development, and help each child achieve the highest level of independence possible.

These conditions develop during fetal growth and may be related to genetic factors or occur spontaneously. Every child’s condition is unique, and care is tailored to their specific needs, age, and stage of development.

What We Treat

Our team evaluates and treats a wide range of congenital hand and upper extremity differences, including:

  • Syndactyly (webbed fingers or toes)
  • Polydactyly (extra fingers or thumbs)
  • Trigger thumb in children
  • Radial longitudinal deficiency (radial club hand)
  • Ulnar longitudinal deficiency
  • Congenital constriction band syndrome
  • Thumb hypoplasia or absent thumb development
  • Brachial plexus birth injuries
  • Limb length differences of the upper extremity
  • Complex congenital syndromes affecting the hand or arm

Multidisciplinary, Team-Based Care

Each patient is evaluated in a coordinated clinic setting that brings together specialists in pediatric hand and upper extremity care. This collaborative approach ensures comprehensive evaluation and streamlined treatment planning.

Care may include:

  • Pediatric hand and upper extremity surgical evaluation
  • Occupational therapy and functional assessment
  • Developmental and growth monitoring
  • Genetic or syndromic condition evaluation when needed
  • Family counseling and education on treatment options

Family-Centered Care

We understand that congenital differences affect both children and their families. Our team focuses on clear communication, education, and long-term support to help families feel confident in each stage of care.

Our goal is not only to improve hand function but also to support confidence, independence, and quality of life.
