Dr. Riboh has an international background, having traveled across the globe as part of his education. He grew up in Fontainebleau, France until completing high school. From there, he traveled to Northwestern University in Evanston, IL where he was selected as part of the Honors Program in Medical Education. He subsequently completed a Masters of Bioengineering program at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. He then pursued his medical degree at the Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, CA, where he spent an additional year pursuing research in tissue engineering. It was at Stanford that he developed a passion for translational research and orthopedic surgery. This passion led him back across the country to Duke University where he completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery. As a resident physician for the Duke Blue Devils, Dr. Riboh fell in love with the field of sports medicine and went on to secure a fellowship position at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, one of the most respected programs in the country. There he honed his surgical, medical and team physician skills in sports medicine, including working with the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox.
Sports Medicine Experience
Dr. Riboh settled in North Carolina after completion of his fellowship. He spent 5 years at Duke University, where he established a reputation for excellence in sports medicine. First and foremost, Dr. Riboh built a robust practice in pediatric and adult sports medicine, treating surgical and non-surgical conditions of the knee and shoulder. He also served as the director of sports medicine research at Duke and ran a laboratory in translational cartilage biology. Perhaps his greatest source of pride was serving as a team physician for a large number of Duke athletes. He was the head team physician for men and women’s lacrosse, softball, swimming and diving, volleyball and softball, co-head team physician for Duke football, and assistant team physician for Duke Men’s basketball. Dr. Riboh takes great pride in understanding the unique dynamics and requirements of each sport and is facile in navigating communication with coaches, athletes, trainers and all other stakeholders. This experience at the Division 1 level benefits all of his patients, whether Little Leaguers or professional athletes. He was then recruited to join the team at OrthoCarolina.

Dr. Riboh’s philosophy of care is influenced by the large number of children that he treats: “When treating children you really have multiple patients - the injured child and their parents. You have to take the extra time to educate the parents at the level that they need to make good decisions and to educate the child at an age-appropriate level that they can understand. I don’t leave the room until everyone, especially the child, understands exactly what is wrong and what I can do to help”. Whether treating children or adults, he believes in thorough patient education, engagement of all stakeholders, and a joint-decision making approach driven by the patient’s unique preferences and circumstances. Through his research endeavors at Duke, Dr. Riboh has learned the tremendous value of being able to synthesize medical evidence in a format that is approachable for patients, and he believes that practicing evidence-based medicine isn’t just about knowing all of the evidence, it’s just as much about being able to convey that evidence to patients to enable their decisions. Finally, he believes in instilling hope in his patients, no matter how complex their problem may be.

Dr. Riboh has published over 60 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, has presented his research over 45 times at national and international meetings, and has contributed to dozens of textbooks in sports medicine. His primary research interest is in improving rehabilitation and return to sport safety after ACL reconstruction in children, where re-injury rates across the country are high. He has established novel paradigms for assessing the safety of return to sport after ACL surgery, reducing re-injury rates in his practice and providing guidelines for pediatric sports surgeons around the country. He is also very interested in understanding the long term implications of knee injury and surgery in children, with a focus on how to prevent a disabling condition called post-traumatic osteoarthritis that develops in up to 50% of individuals with a knee ligament injury. He also serves as the head of the Shoulder Instability Study Group for the American Shoulder and Elbow Society, where he leads multicenter research on techniques to improve the outcomes of shoulder instability surgery. He has served on the Research Committee for the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the leading think tank in the field.
