Specialized Care for Spasticity and Muscle Movement Conditions

The Spasticity Clinic at OrthoCarolina provides specialized evaluation and treatment for patients experiencing spasticity, a condition that causes muscle stiffness, tightness, and involuntary contractions that can affect movement and daily activities.

Led by Dr. Lewis, Dr. Aversano, and Dr. Geary, our team works collaboratively to diagnose the underlying cause of spasticity and develop personalized treatment plans focused on improving mobility, comfort, and function.

Spasticity may occur after conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or cerebral palsy. Whether symptoms affect the arms, hands, legs, or other areas of the body, our specialists provide comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s needs and goals.

What Is Spasticity?

Spasticity occurs when disrupted signals between the brain, spinal cord, and muscles cause increased muscle tone and involuntary muscle contractions. Symptoms may include:

  • Muscle stiffness or tightness
  • Spasms or involuntary movements
  • Limited range of motion
  • Difficulty walking or performing daily activities
  • Pain or discomfort caused by muscle tightness

Early evaluation can help patients better understand their condition and explore treatment options to improve function and quality of life.

Conditions We Treat

The Spasticity Clinic evaluates and treats patients with spasticity related to conditions including:

  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Other neurological conditions affecting muscle control

Spasticity Treatment Options

Treatment depends on each patient’s symptoms, goals, and level of functional impairment. Surgical treatment options offered through the Spasticity Clinic may include:

Hyperselective Neurectomy

A procedure that targets specific nerve branches contributing to abnormal muscle activity to help reduce spasticity.

Tendon and Muscle Lengthenings

Procedures designed to improve flexibility and range of motion by addressing tight muscles and tendons.

Tendon Transfers

A surgical technique that repositions tendons to improve muscle balance and restore function.

Joint Fusions

A procedure that may help improve stability and positioning in patients with severe joint changes related to spasticity.

A Collaborative Approach to Spasticity Care

At OrthoCarolina, our specialists combine orthopedic expertise with a patient-focused approach to help individuals manage spasticity and improve movement. Every treatment plan is personalized based on the patient’s condition, symptoms, and functional goals.
