Dr. O'Brien has given over 70 national/international presentations in addition to publishing numerous articles and book chapters on the subject of spine care, medical coding and healthcare policy. Dr. O'Brien served as co-chair for the 2009 North American Spine Society (NASS) Annual Convention, and has served as course director and/or instructor for numerous spine-related injection courses and conferences. He is a past Board member for the Spine Intervention Society (SIS) and currently sits on the Board of Directors for North American Spine Society serving as Director of Health Policy. He has been a Senior Reviewer for all published NASS Coverage Policies. Dr. O’Brien is on the SIS safety task force and socioeconomic council. He has and continues to serve many positions within NASS, SIS and for the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPMR). Dr. O'Brien is an advisor to the AMA-CPT and has worked on numerous CPT and RUC-related projects and proposals, society position statements, local and national coverage determination policies and various projects dealing with healthcare policy and coverage. He is the CAC advisor for North Carolina and NC State President for AAPMR since 2009. He is an associate editor for The Spine Journal and editorial reviewer for The PM&R Journal and Spineline.
