A native North Carolinian, Dr. Bensen received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed residency training at the Medical University of South Carolina during which he received the prestigious Charles H. Herndon Award from the national Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation for his research on bone grafts. Following his residency, he returned to UNC for a Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery fellowship during which he served as an assistant team physician for the Tar Heels.

Dr. Bensen is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In 2008, he was among the first orthopaedic surgeons in the nation to become subspecialty-certified in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Bensen served as a team orthopaedic surgeon for Appalachian State University and currently for Lees-McRae College and Avery High School. His clinical interests include arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine, and minimally invasive reconstructive knee and shoulder surgery including partial and total joint replacement.

Dr. Bensen has authored or co-authored four book chapters and numerous scientific journal articles and he has given over 20 national and international presentations on his research. Dr. Bensen joined Boone Orthopaedic Associates in 2006 and currently resides in Blowing Rock. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, rock climbing, and fly fishing.
