#YouImprovedChat: Staying Active with a Busy Schedule

Many of us have a lot on our plate when it comes to the day-to-day. We work hard, and we play hard. Or try to, anyway. Aaron Hewitt, PA-C is a physician assistant with OrthoCarolina who works long hours, but loves his job. Outside the clinic, he thrives on keeping his body active and staying healthy. You can typically find him at CrossFit, doing yoga, or running (even marathons!). Aaron joined us for a Twitter chat and took your questions, offering his best advice on how to incorporate activity into your daily routine.  If you missed the chat, here’s what he had to say. 

Q1: How do you find time to exercise in your daily schedule?
A1: If I miss barre class, I have this sweet man to take for a walk! (insert photo)
A2: We will take the stairs up to our office instead of using the elevator! Definitely gets the heart rate up!
A3: 100 push-ups or crunches before bed every night. Often rotating the two. Takes 5 minutes max!
A4: I do my best to walk as many places as possible In fact, I walked to work today.
A5: Walking to the coffee shop in between meetings. It’s great for breaking up the day and getting those steps in!

Q2: How can athletes manage their busy schedules to prevent burnout and overuse injuries
A1: Prioritize sleep and nutrition, and minimize distractions that don’t serve wellness.

Q3: What is the best type of exercise to do if I have an extremely bad knee?
A1: Low-impact activities such as the elliptical, bike, pool and the rower would be beneficial.

Q4: Any tips on how biking could fit into a busy schedule?
A1: Keep a few bikes in the office for employees to share for lunch excursions and short trips!

Q5: Do you think standing desks are beneficial to keep someone active in the office?
A1: Yes! They continually keep you moving during the day and not sitting. Aaron sees more patients requesting them now than ever.

Q6: Lots of people use Fitbits to try and stay active. Is the 10,000 step goal an accurate daily step goal or should it be more?
A1: Between 10,000 to 15,000 steps is optimal. That is in the ballpark of 5-7 miles of walking.

Q7: Should you exercise in the morning or evenings? Is on more ideal than the other?
A1: One isn’t better. Whatever you can fit into your day, as long as you can do it.
