It was no surprise when Dr. McCoy chose medicine as a profession. His mother was a general practitioner and his father was an obstetrician-gynecologist. Dr. McCoy chose orthopedics and adult reconstructive surgery as his subspecialty in order to have the opportunity to profoundly improve the quality of life for his patients.
Dr. McCoy grew up in Charlotte, where he attended Myers Park High School. He graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts with a bachelor’s degree in religion. He received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill and served his internship in general surgery at the Roosevelt Hospital in New York City and his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery, also in New York City.
He joined the practice in 1986 and specializes in knee, hip and shoulder reconstruction. Dr. McCoy is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a founding member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
He lives on the old McCoy farm in Mecklenburg County with his wife, two children, one dog, one cat, seven cows, six goats, three sheep and one llama.
