As healthcare in the United States evolves, the practice of medicine has become very specialized. OrthoCarolina understands the demand for sub-specialty orthopeadic care and has been at the forefront of establishing “sub-specialty” orthopaedic centers (Shoulder and Elbow Center, Foot and Ankle Institute, Hip and Knee Center, etc). The Shoulder and Elbow Center in Charlotte, NC provides care for patients throughout the region and many patients with complex disorders of the shoulder or elbow travel to Charlotte for specialized care. Our talented physicians treat patients ranging from young athletes with sports-related injuries to elderly patients with painful shoulder and elbow arthritis or rotator cuff disease.
Meet Our Physicians
OrthoCarolina’s Shoulder and Elbow Center has become of the largest of its kind in the country. Our team is comprised of 8 board certified orthopedic surgeons who have specialized training in shoulder and elbow surgery. These physicians have received surgical and fellowship training from the most prestigious centers in the world. Our physicians speak at national meetings, author book chapters, and design shoulder and elbow implants that are used world-wide. Using a team approach, the physicians discuss complex cases at weekly meetings to collaborate and find the best possible solutions for their patients. At the OrthoCarolina Shoulder & Elbow Center, our physicians look forward to treating you with the highest level of professional care.
Shoulder Replacement Team
The Shoulder & Elbow Center has four surgeons who specialize in shoulder replacement surgery and perform these procedures on a routine basis. Studies have shown that the success rate of shoulder replacement surgery is directly influenced by the number of shoulder replacements performed by the surgeon. Over the last year these four physicians performed over 600 shoulder replacements. This makes our shoulder replacement center one of the largest in the nation.
Our shoulder replacement surgeons are very careful in deciding to do surgery and all non-operative measures are utilized prior to recommending surgery. If surgery is needed, our shoulder replacement surgeons utilize state-of-the-art techniques. They implant only the most proven shoulder replacement designs to provide our patients with a replacement intended to last their lifetime.
The Shoulder replacement surgeons have vast experience with the “Reverse” Shoulder Replacement which can be used in patients with massive rotator cuff tears. This exciting technology is a very reliable method to treat difficult shoulder problems.
Rehabilitation after surgery is a corner-stone in shoulder replacement. The Shoulder & Elbow Center has selected therapists that are well-experienced in care after shoulder surgery.
Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation
Our Physical Therapy team is comprised of a well trained professional staff that has extensive knowledge in the treatment of the shoulder and elbow. Our facility is conveniently located within the Shoulder and Elbow center which allows us to be in constant communication with your physician. You will enjoy a therapy experience focused on providing you with the highest level of clinical expertise and personalized care. Whether you have sustained a sports or work related injury or have undergone surgery, our staff utilizes the most progressive treatment options and techniques. Our goal is to help you get back to the activities that you love.
Sports Injuries
Sports related injuries affecting the shoulder and elbow are very common. The Shoulder & Elbow Center has been consistently selected as the provider of choice for many of the region's athletic teams including the NFL's Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Knights, UNC Charlotte, Davidson College, Joe-Gibbs Racing and most Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. Our close relationship with local athletic trainers and coaches provide our patients with expedited care for injured athletes. By working closely with the region’s top physical therapists that specialize in high-level sports performance, our patients can receive optimal care and return to play as quickly as possible.
Minimally-Invasive Surgery
Our team of physicians is on the cutting edge of arthroscopic techniques to treat shoulder and elbow conditions. Their advanced training and surgical experience provides them with the ability to perform many complex procedures in a minimally invasive fashion. For example, rotator cuff repair surgery is routinely performed in a minimally invasive fashion at the Shoulder and Elbow Center. In 2010, over 1,100 arthroscopic (minimally invasive) rotator cuff repairs were performed at the Shoulder and Elbow Center in Charlotte, NC. These surgical techniques allow our patients to experience less pain, recover faster, and have a better long-term outcome. Other innovative techniques such as elbow scope procedures are routinely performed and can be used to treat elbow disorders such as arthritis, tennis elbow, and cartilage injuries.
Research and Education
OrthoCarolina is committed to research and education. The Shoulder & Elbow Center has been at the forefront of this mission since its inception. The physicians actively participate in the education of medical students, orthopaedic residents, and fellows. The Shoulder & Elbow Center has produced countless scientific articles, book chapters, and ongoing research studies. Weekly conferences are held with the OrthoCarolina Research Institute to maintain a high standard of clinical research. Ultimately, the goal of our research and continuing education is to optimize the care of our patients.
