Each August we take to the streets with our fellow runners for the annual OrthoCarolina 10K Classic. It’s a celebration of health, athleticism and the human spirit, and one of the best parts is that the funds raised go to help people in our very own communities. We asked Don Jonas, executive director of Care Ring, how the money raised by the OC Classic helps with their mission.

What does Care Ring do?

Care Ring helps those with limited resources in Charlotte establish and maintain good health.

Tell us about some of the health services you provide.

We provide affordable, high-quality health and wellness through a clinic in uptown Charlotte. We coordinate voluntary care across the city from more than 1600 physicians and dentists who want to give back to serve others in need. We empower new moms with the education and connection to community services they need to thrive.

How else do you help Care Ring clients?

We  empower clients – and the community at large – to act as advocates for affordable, quality health care for all by providing educational and advocacy opportunities including community forums, e-mail news, updates and more. Working together and with our elected officials, we can accomplish more than we can individually.

Health literacy is important, and we teach patients how to communicate with their healthcare providers. It’s also imperative that they understand why that communication is important for their health and we guide them through the process.

We also educate those we work with about the Health Insurance Marketplace and the Affordable Care Act, teaching them how to navigate Open Enrollment.

How long has Care Ring been in the Charlotte community?

Care Ring has been a trusted community partner for sixty years. We work side by side with our partners like OrthoCarolina to create a healthy Charlotte so that everyone can enjoy good health.
