The Importance of Elevating Your Heart Rate Through Exercise

Your heart rate is the number of times your heart beats in a minute.  According to the American Heart Association, factors including a person’s age and health activities all determine what a normal heart rate is.  Raising your heart rate during exercise provides a wide variety of long term and short term benefits.  The American Heart Association also recommends physical activity that increases the cardiovascular function for achieving desired physiological and health goals. 

When you exercise, your heart rate increases as the intensity of your workout increases.  This is due to your muscles’ need for oxygen and blood for fuel is increasing and your heart is trying to meet that need.  According to Purdue University, when you increase your heart rate through fitness, your body will become more and more efficient at using and replacing that oxygen and fuel.

Benefits of increasing your heart rate include:

  • Improved cardiovascular fitness
  • Reduce the risk of chronic diseases
  • Weight loss and management
  • Improved balance and coordination
  • Improved performance of daily activities
  • Increased work production
  • Improved recovery
  • Improved stamina

  • Brisk walking

  • Skating
  • Hiking
  • HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) or Circuit Training
  • Running
  • Team Sports
  • Yard Work
