OrthoCarolina offers a Sports Medicine and Shoulder & Elbow Surgery Fellowship, which was introduced in August 2005. This Fellowship offers a unique and comprehensive experience in the fields of sports medicine and shoulder and elbow surgery under the guidance and tutelage of Patrick M. Connor, MD, Donald F. D’Alessandro, MD, and James E. Fleischli, MD.

The Sports Medicine Fellowship includes caring for athletes at all levels of competition, ranging from the most elite professional athletes to the recreational “weekend warriors.”  Teams covered by the sponsoring physicians include the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, the Charlotte Knights (AAA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox), Joe Gibbs’ Racing, Inc. (NASCAR), UNC Charlotte, Davidson College, the Charlotte Soccer Club, and most Charlotte-area high school football teams.

Fellows participate in the evaluation and treatment of athletes in the training room, on the field, in the office and in the operating room. Fellows will also serve as the primary team physicians for their own area high school football teams. Extensive clinical experience will be gained in the evaluation and treatment of common sports-related injuries, as well as the more unusual injuries requiring PCL and multi-ligamentous knee reconstructions, periarticular osteotomies of the knee, and meniscal and cartilage transplantation.

The most unique aspect of this fellowship is its extensive shoulder and elbow experience that is not offered by many other fellowship programs. Fellows are trained in the management and treatment of all shoulder and elbow disorders, including rotator cuff disease, shoulder instability, shoulder and elbow arthritis, elbow fractures and dislocations and elbow instability. All of the latest techniques of arthroscopic shoulder and elbow surgery, elbow ligament reconstructions, and primary and revision shoulder and elbow arthroplasties will be utilized during the fellowship year.

Fellows will also be involved in basic science and/or clinical research. They will work closely with the attending physicians as well as the OrthoCarolina Research Institute to complete their research projects during their fellowship year, present their results at national meetings and publish their manuscripts in peer-reviewed literature. Fellows will have access to the biomechanical and animal labs at Carolinas Medical Center for basic science projects when appropriate.

OrthoCarolina is pleased to offer one of the most comprehensive Sports Medicine and Shoulder & Elbow Fellowship experiences in the country. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have about the program. All interested applicants should contact us with a cover letter and copy of their Curriculum Vitae.
